I recently took the plunge and bought two Vibe kayaks for my girlfriend and I to use touring and fishing. Now I need to figure out how to haul them with a quad cab Tacoma. My preference is on the roof because I don't want to give up storage in the bed under the current soft cover.
I do NOT have roof racks or cross members on the roof at this point. Has anyone hauled two kayaks on the roof of a mid sized truck? Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

Go buy a Thule Xsporter Pro Truck rack with Tacoma clamps... I have used mine on my 2014 Tacoma and my 2016 F-150... it works perfectly.

I got an '04 4-door taco. I put the Thule clamps on and set them about as wide apart as I could. I then got a couple sets of J cradles and haul my wife and I's yaks on...mine is an 11' dagger zydeco and it handles it without problem. I haven't had an issue in the 10 or so years of doing that. I've also hauled my 16' discovery canoe just set on the bars (with a little padding) without issue. I opted for the longer bars...don't remember exactly how long, but gives me plenty of room to put 2 kayaks and a rod pod on top.

I purchased this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HDL2DX6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015D19SS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 about 3 years ago and it has been great. That being said my canoe hauls so good in the bed that I never use the roof rail any more. I also got a cheap set of magnetic tail lights for it as well at harbor freight ($20 if i remember right). The bed extender has been one of those truck purchases that I do not know why I waited so long to get. It has eliminated needing to take a trailer to Lowes I do not know how many times. I highly recommend it. __________________ “Life's hard. It's even harder when you're stupid.”

dcamp, I purchased the same thing for my truck that Bigdan shared. I am not sure about the same brand but they seem all of the same. It's pretty slick!

What Bigdan and Brookie said! I got a custom one made for my old ranger that no longer have. Best way to go from one water to another for all day fishing.

I have a homemade version of the load extender that a buddy made for me. Put pipe insulation on the top bar to decrease scratching and use a ratchet binder to hold them in place.
