Reply with quote | #1 | I know I'm not a "big time" fisherman, but I have fished my share of state trout streams, not to mention the Greenbrier and New Rivers. I bought my lifetime license in 1989 when I was 25 years old. It has been 20 years now and I have never had to show it to a Conservation Officer. How about you all? Personally, I find that a little disconcerting.

I was checked once last year. There's not enough officers to go around, that's for sure. Then again overall law enforcement in WV is pretty slim. __________________ If the world was not in turmoil, we would have nothing to complain about. So, shut up and fish!

Reply with quote | #3 | I've been checked once while fishing, it was at the Burnsville tailwaters. I've been checked once hunting as well, I was with fisherguy doe hunting at the Stumptown public hunting area. Both times were last year. __________________ "So you're for abortion but against killing terrorists...I'm confused." |

I'd never been checked until last summer, and i was checked twice in one week at the same lake. Once was by a CO, the other was by a police officer. The police officer said that since that particular lake is inside city limits, he can write a ticket for not having a license and the city gets the money instead of the DNR. |

Reply with quote | #6 | I've had my lifetime lisc. since 1989, been checked a few times over the years.
Doesn't bother me at all to be checked. I usually end up BS'ing with the CO for awhile. Sometimes I get some good info from them on good huntin or fishin spots.
Last time was earlier this month while fishing for carp at Stonecoal Lake. Seemed like a nice enough feller, but then I wasn't violating any laws so all was good!

The few times I've been checked they were in their vehicle and wanted us to "hold up" our license. Well I decided to let them get out of their warm durango and walk their a## over to me and check them phisically. For some reason they had a problem with that. __________________ Those who wander are not always lost........ |

Never been checked. I saw them checking once at Kanawha State Forest about 2 years ago. I think I remember hearing that there were only 1-2 CO's for each county. __________________ "Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. I've been checked twice in the past three years, each time at the Summersville tailwaters. I think it was by the same CO. She's always nice and I end up shooting the bull for a while. __________________ "The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions." -Alfred Lord Tennyson |

Reply with quote | #12 | In my life, I've been checked once on the Yellow Breeches and while deer hunting in Clearfield County, PA. I was walking towards my truck and I'm sure the WCO's noticed North Carolina tags on my F-150.
My very first trip on the Smoke Hole was by myself. This had to be in the early 90's. When Eagle's Nest Outfitters dropped me off at Big Bend, there were two DNR officers getting ready to launch a canoe. I introduced myself and talked to them. They said that they were going to do a survey on smallmouth bass. They never asked to see my license. __________________ aka CT

I've hunted, fished and occasionally trapped for 35 years and had never been asked to show a license until 2 years ago, when a friend and I were approached by CO's while fishing @ Smokehole C&R. |

Reply with quote | #17 | Been checked hunting and fishing several times. I must look guilty.
But as was said. There are not enough of them. Cover a county, do the paper work, check the fishermen, the hunters, check the trash dumps, appear in court. Where do they find the time? To tell the truth I don't think most of the public knows or understands how important they are, and not just in game issues. Even less, I'm sure, would be willing to pay for more of them. That's the big problem with most issues, everybody wants something for nothing. The money has to come from somewhere. __________________

Reply with quote | #18 | I got my lifetime hunting/fishing license the first year they came out. I''ve been checked once by WV CO's at Stonewall Jackson Lake. I get checked several times a year by the MD DNR while fishing the potomac. They.ve checked me so many times now some of them know me by name and don't bother anymore. |

Reply with quote | #19 | It shouldn't surprise anyone that so few people get checked. There are only 116 conservation officers for the entire state of West Virginia. Of those, at least nine are high-level administrators who seldom have time to do field work. That leaves only 107 officers to cover 55 counties -- fewer than two field officers per county.
That said, I can recall having my license checked at least three times -- all on catch-and-release trout streams.

Reply with quote | #20 | I've been checked a few times while on the stream... mostly on a particular southern stream...
I called 1800NETGAME one time after leaving the Williams to report stringer strikers in the C&R... The CO called me in about two weeks or so to inform me that I had been caught keeping trout on the C&R... unbelievable.. Took me a few minutes to straighten him out...
hehehe...
overall, though, those guys do a great job... they have WAY too much territory to cover with limited resources..

I have been checked a few times not many.. Most times it was on the Elk. Nice enough guys no trouble at all. The local CO I know fairly well. He was on the ridge couple years ago . I was walking toward our farm he seen me stopped to BS. I asked if he wanted to see mine he said no I know you own it up here. I told him I buy them anyhow and pulled them out LOL.. Seems a lot of the COs have changed over the years. Most are friendly that I run into anymore and easy to talk with. Im sure still a few hard cases but seems to be getting better. __________________ Palin 2012 |

I had never been checked until this year. Got checked over on Pond Fork in boone, co this past spring. Also got checked one night Sauger fishin' down in S. Charleston at 1am? Guess he was bored so he went out looking for people. I think I've been checked every single time I've fished in N.C. and twice in NY in 2 years. __________________ "Dude, Your need to fish is overwelming" -Dave Eplin

Reply with quote | #23 | I've been checked twice while hunting (both near Paddy's knob) and once fishing (Cranberry C&R).
The best incident I saw was at Marmet Lochs. The CO drove his boat straight up the current & docked it against the dam. Busted about 4 guys, but he didn't even check me. Probably because I wasn't one of the guys that tried to run. I was amazed at how fast he got the boat up there & how fast he got out of it. |

I used to have a bass boat, I fished a local hot water discharge lake all year around. 100 bass days were the norm, I got checked every time I was on the lake. I knew the two fish commission officers, Dave and John. They knew me, they called me the Italian from Pittsburgh. Before that never. __________________ A bamboo rod is heavier than a fiberglass or graphite rod because the builder poors his soul into his craft. |

Reply with quote | #25 | I've gotten checked a couple times. I've only been required to have a license for about 10 years now (since I was 15), and I've had my lifetime since then. I've never gotten checked on a C/R section though.
Usually no issue.
I got a written warning for not having my license on me when i was like 16 (it was 20 feet away in the truck).
Got a verbal warning once for not having life jackets in the canoe. Just forgot them on a quick trip to a local shallow creek that i could stand up in. Lucked out a bit on that one. This was by a local CO that had checked me canoeing this section a couple times before. He probably recognized me.
Got the vehicle checked once when we were coming out of Sleepy Creek WMA after we stopped and gawked at a Robo-Deer. Everything was ok though.
A couple years ago when I was in Maine, we rented a cabin next door to the local warden. He checked our coolers when we were gasin' up on the way out of town at the convenience store in town, but we had only 3 fish between like 6 of us.
Overall, I guess over the past 10 years, I've been checked about half a dozen times...maybe 8.

I have been checked once and it was at a stream right beside the road. Mostly a wild trout fisherman I dont see many people. I didnt mind a bit, I wish there were more of them around (especially at North Fork of Cherry C/R after its stocked). __________________ Wet waders=Big smiles |

I've only been check twice. Both times it was on well known streams, where you would expect more conservation officers to be. I don't mind being checked at all. I buy my license every year and would gladly show it every time I go out, especially if it meant that our streams and lakes were monitored more often for those not following the law. __________________ May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it. ~Irish Blessing
